Iyengar yoga
Iyengar yoga is an in-depth study of the yoga poses (asanas) and breath work (pranayama). Particular attention is paid to alignment and the teacher adjusts the student so that he or she begins to work more deeply into each pose without injury or pain. Each pose is held for a length of time allowing the student to refine the pose and to find stability within the pose. Props such as bricks, blocks and belts are used to enable anyone of any age or ability to get the best from the poses.
Classes vary each week with some weeks focusing on standing poses, others on forward bends, backbends, twists, recuperative work and once students are established to some degree in their asana practice, then breath work (pranayama) is introduced. The sequencing of the poses allow the student to work towards more complex poses and they gain flexibility and strength in a supported way. Physical health and well-being improve and over time, the psychological benefits of yoga also become apparent.
